Maybe it is supposed to shear like that...?

I have a 5' Competitor Cutter I pull behind my Kubota MX5100. It seems to do a pretty good job cutting, but I have a tendency to shear pins quite often. I am fairly new to the tractor business and from what I am hearing I shouldn't be shearing the 1/2 inch bolt nearly as often as I am.

I have been using the bushhog for some fairly heavy cutting here recently and during an hours worth of work I manage to shear around 5 bolts. I cleaned up around the bank of my pond and didn't shear any pins but when I started cutting some heavy stuff (1"-2" trees/shrubs), I would only do about 15 minutes worth of cutting before I would have to replace the shear pin.

Maybe it is supposed to shear like that...? I had a friend come by while I was working and I asked his opinion. He had his bush hog hooked up to his new Kubota (which uses shear pins) and he said he has used the same shear pin for a long time. The funny part is when he left my place he was back in about 15 minutes to show me what happens when your pin doesn't shear. He busted the yoke on his drive shaft.

Gil's Light Tractor Work

I have a Kubota L2900(30HP) with a loader with 4 way bucket. I have the following equipment:

Surging Lawn Mower

I have an older Craftsman GT 5000 lawn tractor and it seems like I have to work on it every time I mow the grass.  Here recently the RPMs surge constantly and it will not idle.  I decided to figure out what was wrong with it this morning. 

After thinking about what it was doing I come to the conclusion that it must be starving for fuel.  So the first thing I check was the fuel lines and filter.  I had two separate places where the fuel line was leaking and the filter was also in need of replacement. 

After replacing the bad fuel line and filter I found the surging of the RPM was not as severe, but still bad enough to continue troubleshooting.  I reluctantly pulled the air intake and carburetor off to check for possible issues. 

I removed the bowl under the carburetor and there I found my problem.  The bowl had actually rusted on the inside due to water sitting at the bottom of the fuel bowl.  This particular engine has a fitting at the bottom of the fuel bowl where it sucks fuel in for the carburetor.  That fitting has a small hole that will only allow a certain amount of fuel to enter the carburetor at a time.  That little orifice was clogged with rust. 

I cleaned up the carburetor and blew it out with air then reinstalled everything.  No more surging and I could idle the engine again.  Wahoo!! Time to mow some grass.
